Mama-se Mama-sa Ma... Makoosa

Makoosa = (I) dance

Well, not I dance, cuz I don't really dance. Unless, of course, I was listening to Don't Stop The Music by Rihanna. THAT just might make me want to put a little boogie in it. But that's not really the point.

Is there really anything original out there? Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' is a 1983 single released from Michael Jackson's multi-platinum selling 1982 album Thriller. Some think he was the first to Makoosa. Even Rihanna sampled Michael makoosa-ing on her song.

But apparently Cameroonian saxophonist Manu Dibango was the first to Makoosa 10 years earlier. Dibango broke into the American market in 1973 with his classic song Soul Makossa. Some sources even say that Manu successfully sued Michael for plagiarizing his Makoosa. Which probably means that Dibango is one rich dude. Especially now that Rihanna is sampling Jackson, who sampled Dibango, who, apparently, has had his Makoosa sampled by many others.

Are you confused yet? I think it's time to dance.

After all, "there is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven..." (and there is) a time to Makoosa! [ Ecclesiastes 3:1-4 ]
